How to Help Your Arthritic Cat

Caring for a cat with arthritis goes beyond providing pain relief and joint supplements. While veterinary advice is essential, there are many holistic ways to improve your kitty’s comfort and quality of life alongside medical care.

This guide outlines practical tips to make life easier for your arthritic feline.

Rethink Your Flooring

Cats with arthritis will have a hard time walking around on hardwood and tile floors because it takes extra joint strength to keep them from sliding around. Consider placing rugs on areas where your cat typically walks, such as the path to their food bowl, water bowl or litter tray.

Help Them Reach High Places

Cats love climbing and perching in elevated spots, but arthritis can make this difficult. To help them:

  • Install steps or ramps - place pet stairs near beds, sofas, or windowsills so your cat can access their favourite spots.
  • Create stable surfaces - use anti-slip mats on windowsills or shelves to give them a secure landing spot.
  • Rearrange furniture - position furniture close together so your cat can use them as a stepping-stone.

Modify Playtime

Every cat should exercise, but when your cat is in chronic pain, it can be difficult for them to remain enthusiastic about vigorous play time.

Consider changing up the game for something less impactful, such as poking a feather wand out from a duvet cover.

Puzzle feeders and slower-paced games can keep them entertained without too much physical strain.
