Multi-cat Households

Bringing multiple cats into your home can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. Unlike humans, who can be taught to share their space and belongings, cats are naturally territorial creatures. This means that in a multi-cat household, resource management is absolutely essential to prevent stress, aggression, and conflict.

 

So, what exactly does this mean for you as a cat parent? Let’s break it down.

The Golden Rule: One Per Cat, Plus One!

This rule is key for multi-cat households. It means that every cat should have their own resources, and one extra for good measure! This means each cat needs their own:

  • Water bowl
  • Food bowl
  • Bed or quiet area to sleep
  • A vertical space or hidey hole they can escape to
  • Toys
  • Scratching post
  • Litter tray

And you also need to add one more of each of these items to the home.

 

Cats don’t naturally share, even with their siblings, so having an excess of resources ensures that your kitties do not feel the need to compete with one another.

Why Spacing Matters

Placing all the food bowls in one spot or all the litter trays in the same room might seem convenient, but to a cat, this is just one big shared resource!

 

To prevent anxiety and territorial disputes:

 

  • Spread out food and water stations to allow each cat to eat in peace.
  • Distribute litter trays across different areas so no one cat can claim them all.
  • Ensure multiple scratching posts so every cat has a place to mark their territory.
