Repetitive Behaviour

Cats have unique personalities and quirky habits, but when the behaviour becomes repetitive it could mean there is an underlying issue.

Repetitive behaviours can be a sign that your cat is feeling anxious or stressed, or even that they have an underlying medical condition.

In this CatTip we will look at common repetitive behaviours and what it might say about your cat.

Overgrooming

Possible causes:

Stress or anxiety - Cats often groom to soothe themselves. If they feel threatened, bored, or overwhelmed, overgrooming can become a coping mechanism.
Medical issues - Skin allergies, parasites, or pain can also trigger excessive grooming.
Compulsive disorder - In some cases it becomes a compulsive habit, a bit like OCD. This is a sign of chronic stress.

Tail Flicking

Possible causes:

Irritation or agitation - Tail flicking is a sign that your cat is overstimulated or annoyed.
Pain or neurological issues - Repetitive flicking without external triggers might indicate discomfort or nerve-related problems.
Frustration or boredom - Cats left alone too long or without enrichment may display tail-flicking behaviours.

Excessive Meowing

Possible causes:

Attention-seeking - Cats quickly learn that meowing gets a response from humans.
Cognitive decline - Senior cats may vocalise due to confusion or disorientation.
Medical conditions - Hyperthyroidism, hypertension, or pain can increase vocal behaviour.
Stress or loneliness - Especially in indoor-only cats with limited interaction or stimulation.

When to Seek Help

Not all behaviours are a problem and some are normal parts of feline expression. You should seek help when the behaviours:

occur frequently
are repetitive
interfere with normal activities (like eating, sleeping, or playing), or
result in injury
